Training to Become a Master Gardener

In order to become a Master Gardener, interested persons must first attend and complete the Master Gardener Intern Training Program, including passing the final exam. Usually held from January to April each year, these sessions cover topics such as plant science and disease identification. With paid dues (currently just $10/year for an individual or $15 for a two-member household), completing the Intern training is the only requirement for membership.

But we don’t want to stop there! It’s like pulling weeds, once you pull one, you just have to get them all. MCMGA members frequently attend educational programs to acquire the minimum number of hours to maintain an “active” status, Certified Master Gardener status, Advanced Master Gardener status and additional awards. A copy of the "Report of Volunteer Activity and Educational Training" form is attached for our members convenience.

Each year, many organizations offer programs that both inform our areas of need and meet the qualifications for the Master Gardener Program. Members even learn from each other’s presentations!

For more information on Intern training, contact the Madison County office of the Purdue Extension Service

Ways that Master Gardeners maintain their training include any of these:

  • Attending monthly meetings where speakers often present an educational program that counts toward attendee's hourly requirement.

  • Attending a group event such as the bus trip to the Cincinnati Flower Show in April.

  • Attending public service programs such as the Garden Series.

  • Attending an event or seminar where hourly credit is approved by the Extension Coordinator.

  • Attending Advanced Master Gardener Training sessions.

  • Taking a class at an institution of higher learning where credit is approved.
