2010 ANNUAL GARDEN TOUR

Master Gardener's Garden Tour a Delight!

The morning of the Master Gardener's 2006 Garden Tour began on a very positive note. The day was beautiful, not too warm, and there was lots of sunshine. Those who would be working that day had taken the pre-tour the evening before and were excited about all of the work that had gone into preparing for the tour, and how wonderful the gardens looked!

There were eight gardens on the tour this year and as the Preview Brochure said, "Something for Everyone." The following gardens were featured:

#1 ~ Gruenewald House Historical Gardens. This garden appealed to those with an eye for history. It featured a cottage garden with varieties of roses, herbs, and vegetables available before 1900. A traditional grapevine arbor and walk lined with alpine strawberries completed the scene from years gone by. This garden is featured every year and is a popular favorite. It is planned and maintained solely by Master Gardeners.

#2 ~ City Courtyard Garden. This garden was a delight for those who were interested in a small area. You could view the roses as you entered the pergola that would lead you to a pond-less waterfall complemented by a miniature alpine rock garden and a variety of perennials. One particular hit of this tour was the upside down tomatoes growing from the top of the pergola!

#3 ~ English Charm in Madison County. Nestled away in northern Madison County was a true treasure. Rolling hills and pine trees painted the perfect backdrop on these expansive yet private grounds. Several mini perennial gardens offered a new surprise around every corner. The star of the show was an exquisite formal English Garden. The peace and elegance of this garden was a true reward to those who visited.

#4 ~ Story Book Magical Gardens. This was a garden for the young and young at heart. Nestled among the perennials, vegetables, herbs, and annuals, you found Brer Rabbit’s Briar Patch, Little Bo Peep (and her sheep), Alice in Wonderland’s White Rabbit, and many other storybook favorites. Also featured in the gardens were a greenhouse/potting shed, and a magical playhouse complete with a puppet theater.

#5 ~ Mounds View Gardens. Sun and shade combined to produce a collection of gardens featuring over 200 varieties of hostas, a cutting garden, a water feature, and a vegetable garden that hosted more than 25 varieties of tomatoes. A very special feature of this property is that it serves as an official Monarch Butterfly Waystation.
